American songwriter Stephen Steinbrink, who over two decades has become one of the most distinctive writers on the U.S. West Coast, releases his tenth album, In A Split Mirror. Its central theme is the elusiveness of the self: it changes over a lifetime, blurs in dreams, where a person may turn into a childhood version of themselves or into someone else entirely, and dissolves into its surroundings. The album was conceived and, over two years, recorded largely in solitude at Headlands Center for the Arts, an artist residency on a decommissioned military base that Steinbrink helps run. The workspace was a 120-year-old basketball court with twenty-foot ceilings overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and the scale of the room altered the album’s sense of time and proportion.

The sound deliberately departs from the roughness of his earlier records Utopia Teased and Disappearing Coin: the arrangements have become minimal, lucid, and spacious. The foundation is guitar, drum machines, and astonishingly organic synth pads; the production and mix are free of gloss, though the music remains lush and ornate. Longtime collaborators contributed: pianist Andrew Dorsett (LAKE), saxophonist and composer Cole Pulice, drummer Chase Kamp (Body Double), and pedal steel player Nick Levine (Jodi, Al Menne). Still, the album remains above all Steinbrink’s own construction, a minimalist movement through genre that has become recognizably his.

The lyrics are built on doubles, mirrors, facsimiles, transformed bodies, and unreliable memory, not as decorative surrealism but as a symbolic language closer to the truth than coherent narration. The album opens with “It’s Not My Dream,” which sets the internal dream against the external one, including the question of what a song is worth if it can’t be sold. The three-part suite “Calcified” starts from a dream of a father who is a boat and an anxious question about whether one’s true nature will change, then dissolves into a drone of Casio, saxophone, and cello. In “I’m a Swimming Pool” the narrator merges with a pool, and in “I’m a Worm” he cycles through the roles of core and worm in an apple-world, living out the contradiction of part and whole.

The album’s center is “Magic Mirror”: the past self is encountered as a doppelgänger from 2003, and memory, distorted like a dream yet no less true, leads to the question of whether one has always been two people. The nearly slowcore “Driving Around in Arizona” is a rare sociological look, for Steinbrink, at the arid exurbs of his youth: the “subtle violence” of the built landscape deforms people spiritually and drives them to isolate themselves from community and love, while memory both shapes and shrouds the self. The closing track, “Opening Windows in May,” offers a kind of resolution: the self settles into a concrete present, anchored in the rhythms and rituals of the seasons.

The album’s final thought is that identity may be least true when it seems most coherent, and that value lies in what emerges when the self is refracted, misremembered, or dissolved into its surroundings. The record doesn’t try to mend these fractures; it lingers inside them, noticing the strange continuities that survive life’s transformations. What is most fragile and mutable in a person turns out to be what remains most vivid.

The release is the first for Sedimentary Archive, a new imprint of the Berlin label Mansions and Millions. The label grew out of Berlin’s underground community of left-field pop musicians, a circle of friends and collaborators, and the new imprint carries that sensibility into a wider frame, making room for idiosyncratic pop made outside the label’s immediate geography.
