Smokie - The Collection (1992)

Smokie is an English rock band from Bradford, Yorkshire. Formed in 1964, they initially performed under the names "The Yen," "The Sphynx," and later "Essence." The classic lineup, which played melodic, disco-influenced rock music, came together in 1975. They originally used the name "Smokey," but Smokey Robinson requested that they change the spelling to avoid confusion. The band’s popularity is largely credited to producer Mickie Most, as well as songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman.

Their 1976 album, *Midnight Café*, was released under the name "Smokie" and became a major success. Several of their singles also charted, including "If You Think You Know How To Love Me" and "Don't Play Your Rock And Roll To Me" in 1975. The classic hit "Living Next Door To Alice" appeared on their album *Pass It Around*. In 1979, the band's contract with Chinn and Chapman expired, and their subsequent album, *The Other Side Of The Road*, did not achieve the same level of success as their earlier work. In 1980, the band officially announced their breakup. However, following several lineup changes, the group continues to exist to this day and still releases new albums.

An album featuring their most successful songs was released in 1992, with six additional tracks included on unofficial pressings.
