Scottish fiddler and visual artist Louise Bichan, who grew up in the Orkney Islands and now lives in Maine, releases the album Binnorie (catalogue number ÂRUK0009) on Adhyâropa Records on 30 October 2026. It consists of thirteen pieces from her live show All Hallows’ Eve, built around Samhain customs, northern folk tales and ballads about trowies (the underground folk of Shetland and Orkney lore), sea serpents and selkies. The tracks include ballads such as Three Ravens and Binnorie-o, the tale Kate Crackernuts performed with spoken parts, and instrumental Trowie Tunes.
Bichan recorded the album with her live band: guitarist Conor Hearn, mandolinist Ethan Setiawan, who also mixed the record, and cellist Brendan Hearn. Guests include Aoife O’Donovan, Kris Drever, Rachel Sermanni, Katie McNally, pianist and synthesist Neil Pearlman, and double bassist Noah Fishman. The recording uses foley (sound effects made by the musicians themselves) and narration, and adds synthesizers and electric tenor guitar to the traditional sound. Bichan’s music is thoughtful and complex, curious and playful, and her stories link people, nature, the past and the possible future. She made the artwork herself as a collage that includes archival Shetland photographs and an image of a troll. The release is accompanied by an East Coast US tour, with dates from 29 October to 8 November.
