Seattle band Iroiro has released a debut single, and after only a few gigs it is already being talked about as the city’s most exciting rock group. Its core is Michiko Swiggs and Kento Oiwa, known from the duo IQU, where they made playful, sample-driven takes on trip-hop, drum and bass, and synth-pop. In this new project they move into extended instrumental jams that grow into psychedelic rock.
The group formed after the end of Zazaz: Swiggs and Justin Schwartz invited Oiwa, who also plays in Malaise, and they were joined by James Drage of SIL2K, whose effected bass Swiggs called “amazing and otherworldly.” The single has two tracks. Once begins as loping, chiming rock and turns into an elegant blur of distortion; Formosa combines arena-rock swagger with noisy psychedelia and a wistful melodic touch. Both were recorded with Stuart Hallerman in the ’70s room at Avast! and mixed on vintage equipment, while side B was recorded with David Farrell at Arrival Seattle. Beauty and chaos coexist here on equal terms.
Tracklist:
1. iroiro - Once
2. iroiro - Nanashi
3. iroiro - I Didn't I Will
4. iroiro - Formosa
5. iroiro - Cool Man Sicks
6. iroiro - Sandia
