The London quartet Dog Unit — Sam Walton, Henry Scowcroft, James Weaver and Lucy Jamieson — has released the album “Runners” on the label Brace Yourself, a notable step toward a larger, more orchestral sound. For the recording the band assembled a specially commissioned string quartet and brought in the experimental bass clarinetist Heather Roche, so melody and timbral texture are woven together more closely than on the group’s earlier work.
The material was recorded at the musicians’ own studio in London’s Limehouse under longtime producer and collaborator Mark Estall. Beyond the familiar rock line-up, the arrangements use vintage synthesizers, drum machines, piano and harmonium, which serve not as background but as full compositional colors. The result is a set of compact, tightly interlocked pieces running about 42 minutes in total, designed to be heard as one continuous sequence from start to finish. The sound leaves room for slow build-ups and precisely crafted arrangements. Staying within indie rock and alternative, the band broadens its expressive language toward something more cinematic while keeping its attentive, detail-oriented playing style.
