German producer Bryan Müller, known as Skee Mask, has unexpectedly released the album “Final Circle” on City Slang, recorded with American guitarist Patrick McDermott, who performs as North Americans. McDermott plays “ambient country-folk” and is associated with Third Man. The record departs noticeably from Müller’s familiar sound: instead of taut, driving beats and fractured breaks reminiscent of AFX, it favors euphoric textures and acoustic softness. It is a short series of pastoral meditations.
Müller has worked with ambient before: the 2020 EP “ISS006” and its follow-up already showed his range. “Final Circle” continues that line. Granular, loose sounds, subtle interference and buried rhythms blend with the faded, stonewashed twang of McDermott’s guitar. The track titles are dates, such as “05012023”, “15102021” and “29072025”. On “05012023” the steel strings barely cut through Müller’s digitally corrupted drones and sound from a distance, like birdcalls above a city of tower blocks and strip malls. On “15102021” the guitar moves to the front and leads gentle melodies over Müller’s backdrop, inadvertently recalling the early work of Jonas Munk under the name Manual. “29072025” drifts into a more abstract, digital space, where Müller adds denser synthetic textures. Even here the mood is rarely disturbed: the album moves from one blissful episode to the next and ends on a pinkish, burni
