Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, a former boxer and influential showman born in 1929, rose to fame for his outrageous stage persona and his 1956 recording of “I Put a Spell on You,” his signature hit. The song became widely known for its primal screams and groans, which emerged during a drunken studio session in Cleveland, Ohio. These early performances ultimately laid the foundations for shock rock and shaped his career for decades. In 1972, the artist recorded a more thoughtful version of the song in Nashville for the album *Portrait of a Man*. Accompanied by his trademark prop—a skull on a stick named Henry—he delivered an emotional monologue that underscored his shift toward a more refined soul style. Producer John Richbourg called this version a showcase of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’s versatility, introducing his evolving talent to a new generation of soul-rock fans.
