The third album by Sampa the Great, Nu Zamrock, is built on a contradiction embedded in its title: it fuses Zamrock — the Zambian psychedelic rock of the 1970s, shaped by Cream, Black Sabbath and funk — with contemporary rap. Sampa’s uncle played in WITCH, one of the movement’s key bands, so the musical lineage is a family one, and her delivery makes a history-bound style sound “new” again.
The Melbourne-based multi-talented rapper and singer leans on shuffles, a rarity in rap. “Prayer in a Dance” is a guttural, bluesy, circular moan over an Amadou & Mariam-style vamp; “Simon Says” is a rapid-fire run of triplets in which she rejects negativity and declares her demons dead. Her cover of Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us” becomes noticeably grittier while staying catchy, and “Gone” is a big breakup ballad. The guitar instrumental “Nicole’s Interlude” ranks among the record’s best tracks.
Unlike her two previous albums, this one is lean: it runs 40 minutes shorter than each of them, making it well suited to repeat listens. Sampa’s blend of African, Australian and Western forms has no real counterpart.
