British singer-songwriter Samia Malik, who grew up in Bradford in an Urdu-speaking cultural milieu, is releasing a remastered edition of her debut album The Colour of the Heart. It first came out in 1998 alongside her touring band Garam Masala, and the remaster for the 30 October 2026 release was done by Camilo Tirado. The album opens the four-part series Azaadi | آزادی | A Journey To Freedom, which traces her life in two languages, from a Bradford childhood to touring the UK, India and the USA.
The record gathers eleven of her earliest songs, in Urdu and English. Among her own compositions, “Ma Ki Zabaan” (“Mothertongue”) tells of nearly losing Urdu and reclaiming it, while “Kooch Loag” (“Some People”) asks: “Have you ever made yourself smaller to be loved?” Other songs set classic Urdu poets: “Hum Gunagaar Aurtae” (“We Sinful Women”), to words by Kishwar Naheed, reclaims the word “sinful”, which has long been used to silence and control women. “Hijurat” (“Migration”) draws on Ishrat Aafreen, and “Chand Kitna Tunha Hae” (“The Moon”) on Sara Shagufta.
For Malik, these songs were a way to survive racism and enforced silence and to find her own language, and music and art saved her. The album stands as a call for freedom and solidarity and for the right of every woman to voice her own experience. Written almost thirty years ago, the songs remain just as current and urgent. A separate film for each song is available on YouTube.
