Berlin-based German-Brazilian singer Gloria de Oliveira releases “The Lying Swans,” her third full-length album and effectively her first true solo record. It follows the EP compilation “Fascination” (Reptile Music, 2020) and “Oceans of Time” (Sacred Bones, 2022), a collaboration with David Lynch’s longtime sound designer Dean Hurley. The new album was produced by Randall Dunn, known for his work with Anna von Hausswolff, Sunn O))) and Marissa Nadler, and recorded in Iceland, New York and Berlin.
Its nine songs unfold like a Gothic novel set in motion by the image of a woman fleeing a haunted house, which also shaped the album’s visual world. It is a work of magic realism: birds, saints, sirens, ghost ships and bloody faces. The sound is earthier and more tactile than before, moving away from misty reverb and gauzy fuzz, yet her seraphic, yearning voice remains the focal point. Alongside her play drummer Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Tori Amos, Pearl Jam), guitarist Lennard Zander, cellist Gyda Valtysdóttir (múm), harpist Marilu Donovan (LEYA, Eartheater, Julie Byrne) and synthesist Ulfur Hansson; Tor Lundvall, an ambient icon, delivers a rare spoken-word performance. The transverse flute of Lina Andonovska takes a leading role, lending an airy yet unsettling tone rooted both in de Oliveira’s Brazilian heritage and in 1970s–80s Italian giallo soundtracks.
The music moves freely between the spectral and the pastoral, blending fantasy and giallo film scores, ancient folk traditions and the rhythmic tenderness of bossa nova, MPB and Tropicália. The lyrics weave mythology together with allusions to Milton’s Paradise Lost and the poetry of Keats, Emily Brontë and Anne Sexton. The album is available on CD (digisleeve with booklet) and on LP in classic black, coke bottle green or white-blue marbled vinyl.
