In the mid-1970s, the Roman composer Giuliano Sorgini wrote music for television documentaries, and much of that material was never released. Eight years after Africa Oscura, the label Four Flies issues a new selection from this archive: Savana Selvaggia. The album is devoted to Africa, the continent that left the deepest mark on the composer’s work. It is an imagined Africa suspended between ethnographic documentary, psychedelia, and Krautrock electronics: ancestral percussion, synthesizers, enigmatic themes, and a sound resembling a spiritual journey.
The record opens close to the hypnotic atmosphere of Africa Oscura: bird calls, primitive tumbas, and bewitching melodies immerse the listener in the jungle. The music then turns sunnier and more contemplative. On “Wild Life,” the savanna theme is built from percussion, acoustic guitar, electric bass, Hammond organ, and flute, while on “Alba sulla savana,” the wordless vocals of Edda Dell’Orso create a feeling of otherworldly calm. These pieces connect with another of the composer’s masterpieces, Zoo Folle: the same attention to the animal world, the same transformation of nature and sound into dreamlike matter, and the same palette of drum machines, Moog, and Solina. The resemblance is so strong that some of the material was probably recorded in the same 1974 sessions. The artwork and lettering, as with Africa Oscura, are by Luca Barcellona. The release arrives on LP and digitally on 30 October.
