In 1977, Italian composer Ennio Morricone wrote one of his most unusual and daring scores for “Autostop Rosso Sangue” (“Hitch-Hike”), a psychological road thriller by Pasquale Festa Campanile, a director best known until then for comedies. The film stars Franco Nero, Corinne Cléry and David Hess. It was shot in Abruzzo but set on imaginary California highways, where a married couple who pick up a dangerous hitchhiker descend into fear and violence. Its dark, radical tone sets it sharply apart from the rest of the director’s work.
The music carries the same tension. “Autostop” and “Sunshine” open with light, almost carefree melodies that promise freedom, only to be broken by obsessive repetition and unsettling harmonies. “Violazione violenta” and “Nevrosi sulle strade” rely on dissonance, percussive tension and silence, while the lyrical “Ultima occasione” and “Altri tempi” bring in a fragile melancholy. Edda Dell’Orso provides vocals on “Notturno per tre,” “Violazione violenta,” “Nevrosi sulle strade” and “Ultima occasione,” and I Gladrags sing “Sunshine.” The recording was made at Ortophonic Studio in Rome, with sound engineer Sergio Marcotulli.
The original soundtrack was pressed in only 500 copies. Now the label CAM Sugar, as part of its Morricone Segreto series devoted to the composer’s hidden and daring works, is reissuing it for the first time since 1977: on CD in a digipack, restored from the original master tapes and newly remastered in high definition, bringing out the full dynamic range and timbral richness of the recording.
