Chicago-born singer Delores LaVern Baker came from a celebrated blues family: her aunt was Merline Johnson, “The Yas Yas Girl,” and she was a relative of Memphis Minnie. She started in church choirs, then fought her way through the competitive clubs of Chicago and Detroit as “Little Miss Sharecropper.” In 1953 she signed with Atlantic Records, and her powerful voice, rhythmic precision and fierce independence reshaped American popular music of the mid-twentieth century. She later became only the second female solo artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A retrospective of 18 of her best A- and B-sides covers her golden era. Side A follows her rise as a crossover pioneer: the breakthrough rhythmic “Tweedle Dee” (1954), the hits “Bop-Ting-a-Ling” and “Play It Fair,” and “Jim Dandy,” which won over audiences across markets. Side B shows her maturity as an interpreter able to convey adult longing: the cinematic ballad “I Cried A Tear” with King Curtis on saxophone, the gospel-rock “Saved” by Leiber & Stoller, and “See See Rider” (1962), an urbanized reworking of a song by Ma Rainey. Together they portray a founding figure of rhythm and blues.
