GuruGanesha Band plays “bhakti rock” — music in which sacred mantras from the Kundalini Yoga and Sikh traditions are interwoven with jam-rock improvisation. The band’s reference points are the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band and the Dave Matthews Band; their guitar solos echo the legacy of Jerry Garcia and Duane Allman and are meant to hold their own on festival stages such as Bonnaroo and Lockn’. The album People of Love came out around Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday and is conceived as a counterweight to the chaos and confusion of the modern world: it offers hope, a call to sanity and faith in the Divine Presence, and reminds listeners of their right to feel good, move their bodies and attune their spirits. The record opens with a title track built on an intricate, groovy guitar part; among its songs, the single “The Soul Within” stands out, urging the listener to recognize their true identity and sacred self.
