The album Ce que le jour doit à la nuit features music composed by Armand Amar for Alexandre Arcady’s 2012 film of the same name. Based on Yasmina Khadra’s 2008 novel, the story follows Younes, known as Jonas, as he searches for love and his place in the world in colonial Algeria from the 1930s through the 1960s. Produced through a collaboration between Alexandre Films, Orange Studio, and other partners, the film was shot in Tunisia because of restrictions in Algeria. Amar continues his long-standing professional collaboration with Arcady, having previously composed music for films such as Comme les cinq doigts de la main. The soundtrack pairs atmospheric pieces, such as “Rio Salado,” with diverse musical contributions from performers including Alban Sautour and Nouria Rovira Salat. It also includes a piano transcription of Schubert’s “Gretchen am Spinnrade,” intended to reflect Jonas’s childhood attachment to his adoptive mother, Madeleine. The recording features renowned soloists, including Sarah Nemtanu and Driss El Maloumi; critics praised their contributions to the film’s expressive soundscape.
