Amarjit Kaur is one of the leading performers of Indian devotional music in the United States, her voice recognized worldwide as the feminine voice of Gurbani Kirtan, the Sikh chanting of sacred scripture. Many years ago she moved to America to teach hundreds of Western students the art of kirtan, and today she remains the best-known female ragi in the country: gurudwaras everywhere are eager to host her, prizing her harmonium playing and expressive voice. Her debut album is a two-CD set in which the daily Sikh prayers (banis) are recited in a simple, powerful manner: the first disc holds the morning banis, the second the evening ones. The recording opens with a haunting introduction on santur and Indian violin; thanks to its clear, precise enunciation, it suits both memorizing the texts and daily prayer practice.
