Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson (born October 27, 1978, in Singapore)—known by the stage name Vanessa-Mae (Chinese: 陳美, Chén Měi)—is a renowned British classical and pop musician, and a particularly gifted violinist.
At the age of four, she moved to England with her mother. She began learning the piano, and a year later, she started the violin as well. At eight, she went to Beijing to study the violin, completing a three-year course in just six months.
She did not speak a word of Chinese.
She gave her first performance at the age of ten, and at eleven, she began her studies at the Royal College of Music. During this period, she performed works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Her debut album, *The Violin Player*, was released in 1995. The record blends classical music with pop, jazz, and techno. That same year, Vanessa gave a successful performance in Times Square, New York.
