Rhythm Machine were an Indianapolis band founded by bassist and bandleader James Boone, who also played in the Highlighters. Their only album, recorded in the mid-1970s and released in 1976, got almost no distribution at the time and stayed a rarity for decades. Today it ranks among the most highly regarded independently issued works in the soul/funk canon, running from hard funk to haunting ballads.
Egon (Eothen Alapatt), founder of Now-Again Records and former general manager of Stones Throw Records, became interested in the band while hunting for independent soul and funk records for the anthology The Funky 16 Corners (2001). In 2003 he released the single “Brenda and Me / Put a Smile On Time” as an extended disco edit in the Soul Cal series. He then helped Traffic Entertainment Group reissue the album itself.
The 2012 edition is expanded. It adds three previously unreleased tracks that Boone recorded with the band in the late 1970s, before the group fell apart after the death of member Maride Williams. The release comes with detailed liner notes by Egon and previously unpublished photos. The tapes were restored and remastered, and Errol Richardson handled the art direction. The long tracks “Brenda and Me” (8:34) and “Thought My Love Was Fine” (9:09) show the band’s range. Beside them sit short, tight funk numbers such as “You Got Action, You Got Me”. In 2025 the Spanish label Vampisoul, together with Now-Again, issued the album on vinyl.
