After the 1984 release of Let It Be, the Minneapolis band The Replacements had earned too much acclaim to remain on the independent label Twin/Tone, which, like many indies in the mid-’80s, was struggling with distribution. Their crosstown rivals Hüsker Dü had already jumped to a major label, and the ‘Mats followed them to Sire. They nonetheless recorded the album Tim (1985) in their hometown, with Tommy Ramone of the Ramones producing. He gave them a big, roomy sound: guitars gained muscle, while drums and vocals gained reverb. Compared to Let It Be the record is polished, yet next to American underground rock of the era, the Ramones included, it remains loose and kinetic.
The biggest change, though, is in the songs themselves. Where Let It Be split almost evenly between ragged vulgarity and open-hearted rockers, with Paul Westerberg’s best songs notable for their complete lack of affectation, on Tim he becomes a self-aware songwriter: he deliberately writes alienation anthems for the misfits of the whole country — “Bastards of Young,” “Left of the Dial” (a love letter to college radio), “Swingin Party,” “Here Comes a Regular,” “Hold My Life.” The confessional streak is at its peak, but Westerberg no longer undercuts or hides it as he did on the Twin/Tone albums; he pairs it with the exuberance of “Kiss Me on the Bus” and channels his smart-ass streak into the cynical rockabilly shuffle “Waitress in the Sky.”
The price is the loss of the old recklessness: no stumbling, no throwaway jokes, and even the rave-ups “Dose of Thunder” and “Lay It Down Clown” sound tightly controlled, however hard guitarist Bob Stinson tries to pull them apart. Some fans never got over the change, but the band became deeper, speaking — sometimes mumbling — to the losers and outcasts living on the fringe. If Let It Be captured the spirit of The Replacements, Tim captured their soul.
