Dear Pola is an album built around the question of how far we are the authors of what makes us who we are. A person is shaped by what is inherited, what is repeated, and what they try to break: family stories, absences, attachments, actions whose consequences remain unknown, and the odd persistence of the past in the most ordinary things. These themes are left open rather than resolved. The songs deal with childhood, lineage, love and mourning, and with how hard it can be for even the closest people to understand one another.
The record was made over ten days in a house. Its foundation is voice and guitar captured simultaneously, so the live performance can be heard in the songs. The arrangements and sonic textures were added by Dear Pola as an extension of that foundation: they smooth over nothing and keep the rough edges of the original takes.
