New York saxophonist, pianist and bandleader Anant Pradhan, together with Jamaican scene veteran Larry McDonald, has released a new single on Names You Can Trust, a follow-up to their 2022 debut, which reimagined two cinema standards in the spirit of Jamaica’s golden era. The A-side, “Thief,” reworks Henry Mancini’s music for the 1973 comedy “The Thief Who Came To Dinner”: the composer’s rare groove becomes a funky reggae single in the “flyers” style — the kind of records sold in Jamaican shops of that period. The B-side, “Earl,” grew out of studio improvisation and is conceived as the soundtrack to a nonexistent vintage film: a breezy, sunlit reggae tune dedicated to the memory of Jamaican pianist Earl Appleton, on which Pradhan moves from saxophone to piano, appearing not as an interpreter but as a creator of original material. The recording gathers an all-star lineup from New York’s reggae scene: Preet Patel and Rich Terrana (The Frightnrs), trombonist Clark Gayton, Matt Burdi and Michael Sarason (The Far East), Brett Tubin (Channel Tubes), trumpeter Billy Aukstik, bassist Steve Capeccia, and Victor Axelrod (Ticklah). McDonald has been in music for over sixty years, and he and Pradhan are members of the touring lineup of the legendary The Skatalites. The result is a timeless sound of instrumental reggae with a cinematic mood.
