The Oakland quartet The Loved Ones, one of the most prominent bands of the California mod scene, is releasing a new album, “Latest Hits!” — their first in many years on which the group is once again writing and recording together. It was produced by Grammy winner Nick Waterhouse, known for his love of retro R&B, and recorded to analog tape to preserve its live energy.
The band formed in 1990 and was an instant supergroup of sorts: its sound drew on Chicago blues, the British Invasion, garage rock, Memphis soul, and New Orleans R&B. Two albums and a single came out on Hightone Records; the band toured every region of the US, opened for John Lee Hooker and Junior Wells, and then toured Spain, France, and the Netherlands. The group split in 1995. Guitarist Xan McCurdy later joined Cake and is still with them, while Bart Davenport recorded eight solo albums, several of them on Lovemonk. Although the musicians had reunited several times, “Latest Hits!” is a true return to creating together.
The classic line-up consists of McCurdy, Michael Therieau, John Kent, and Davenport. Twelve originals, with lyrics by Davenport and Therieau, span the whole range of 1960s rock’n’roll: the endless boogie of “Mad, Bad LUV,” Merseybeat on “Down That Road,” garage rock harmonies on “True Love Or Temptation,” and freakbeat on “Vagabond.” Therieau, who rarely sings lead, delivers the soulful “Over & Over,” inspired by bluebeat. McCurdy’s tough yet playful riffs and Kent’s anachronistic beats set the tone of the record. Decades of experience gained apart brought maturity to the grooves they have loved since their teens, and the sound rests on the distinctive contribution of each of the four musicians.
