Singer-songwriter Geneviève Beaudoin of Portland, Maine, who records as Dead Gowns, went to Las Vegas to help a close friend move and start a new life there. Yet that newness hid an old fracture in the friendship, and it was in Vegas that the friendship ended. Beaudoin sees this loss as one we rarely prepare for: we expect pain and rupture in romance, but losing a close friend cuts just as deep, because friendship holds up so much of our sense of belonging and mattering.
Raw and unraveled, she returned to Maine and realized she needed to hear these songs as much as she needed to write them. The result is “Vegas,” the second full-length album by Dead Gowns. It was recorded in a farmhouse at the foot of the White Mountains with Beaudoin’s long-time partner Luke Kalloch, and produced by Sam Kassirer and Colin Lester Fleming. The songs are raw and smoldering, and they suddenly gape open, together tracing how grief moves. Place and time, memory and self, seed and fruit, “hardcore and wellness” all blur into one another. Every instrument answers the ache in Beaudoin’s voice, and as the album unfolds, that voice increasingly becomes its anchor, amid bright lights and dark waters.
