British artist, photographer and designer Colin Broster, born in the Netherlands in 1955 and settled in London after art school, recorded The Compromise in 1985 — a work of art pop where visual thinking meets musical freedom. He painted the cover himself. His songs work like film frames and photographs of a metropolis in motion: advertising, consumer culture, fashion, health, technology, politics and gender meet invented, observed and semi-autobiographical characters, told with witty, lively irony and sympathy. The sound is equally unbound: jangle pop and new wave with touches of skiffle, psychedelia and assorted lo-fi moods.
The opener “Dirty Photographs”, set to nearly sunny music, addresses how mass media construct images — the contrast between bright sound and sharp message is the heart of the idea. Broster is strongest in stories of people lost in love’s labyrinths: “Complicated” and “Somebody Else’s Heart” are catchy and painfully relatable. In spirit the album is close to the eccentric funk of Gary Wilson and the surreal storytelling of Clete Stallbaumer, and in its fusion of film, art and sound to the New York no wave scene and Gray, the band of Jean-Michel Basquiat. It is a monument to an era when the boundaries between creative media began to blur, and strumming a guitar or programming a drum machine became another way to make a lasting picture.
