Musician Wendy Eisenberg has released radically slowed-down and extended versions of two songs from her self-titled album of this year, treated in the spirit of chopped and screwed. She made them together with Trevor Dunn, Mari Rubio, and Ryan Sawyer, whose combined experience spans jazz, metal, country, ambient, minimalism, and hyperpop.
The idea grows out of Eisenberg’s jazz training: she wants to hear her material in different contexts, like a standard that sounds different as it passes through time and hands. She aims to write songs that feel infinite and outlast their own production. Stretching them makes it possible to sense the moment when a slowed-down song becomes ambient, then jazz, then something else.
Both songs are explicitly about memory, and the process applied to them is about duration, which changes how time is perceived inside them. The form is preserved, but sections blend into one another, turn into solos, and become worlds of their own. Returning to a chorus after fifteen minutes feels entirely different from returning after a minute and a half. Eisenberg acknowledges it could be read as a Cagean gesture — making a pop song stay interesting past twenty minutes — but the core motive is simple: she wants the band to keep playing.
