Italian double bassist and composer Mario Iannuzziello is releasing the album “The Town Does Not Exist” on AlfaMusic. It reached streaming platforms on October 23, 2026, with CD and vinyl editions following on November 6 via AlfaMusic/Egea distribution. The title single is already on the radio.
The album was recorded in New York at Bunker Studio, produced by John Davis — the fulfillment of a long-held wish to play with musicians who live and sustain the city’s contemporary jazz scene. Iannuzziello’s bass is joined by pianist Addison Frei and drummer Diego Joaquin Ramirez, and the trio’s playing is built on mutual listening and dialogue.
The record contains eight pieces plus two alternate takes (“I Fall in Love Too Easily” and “Blues on My Mind”), ten tracks in all. The bassist’s originals sit alongside reimagined jazz standards (“I Thought About You,” “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” “Blues on My Mind,” “My Old Flame”); the original pieces include “Little Church,” “The Dobler-Dahmer Theory” and “Hindsight.” The style combines lyricism with modern rhythmic solutions, setting up a dialogue between past and present.
The title track is inspired by the poetry of Anne Sexton, specifically “The Starry Night” — not its literal text, but the image of the sky as an immense upside-down ocean that provokes vertigo. The piece conveys emptiness and existential incompleteness through a sparse, intimate sound. The whole album is contemplative: it evokes the silence that precedes sound, plays with chiaroscuro, and hints at regret and quiet longing. The bass searches and digs, expressing the tension before resolution, and the endings of the pieces are especially fine.
