Singer Big Mama Thornton recorded In Europe in London in 1965 during the American Folk Blues Festival. Released by Arhoolie, the album captures one of her most distinctive live performances: powerful, raw vocals and a gift for transforming R&B classics for a new audience. Mississippi Fred McDowell accompanies her on slide guitar on several tracks, while the electric backbone is provided by Buddy Guy (guitar), Eddie Boyd (piano) and Fred Below (drums). The sound moves between acoustic moments and driving full-band arrangements. The program includes a version of her hit “Hound Dog” updated for the 1960s, linking her early success with the emerging blues and rock scene.
The reissue is of particular interest to collectors: it comes in mono, with a tip-on cover and the original artwork. Thornton is regarded as a formative influence on Elvis Presley; her song “Ball ’n’ Chain” inspired Janis Joplin, and she later influenced bands such as Alabama Shakes. The album remains an important document of her career and a clear testament to her influence on blues, rhythm & blues and rock.
