Asa Tone is a trio spanning Jakarta and New York, made up of vocalist Melati ESP, producer Tristan Arp and Kaazi. Their release on Music From Memory, “Mutualkind”, blends electronica with gamelan: light, feathered rhythmic melodies, hyaline synths and heavily processed vocals, polished by Arp’s filigree production. Its mood recalls the jams of Ariel Kalma, Asa-Chang & Junray’s “Hana” and the work of Visible Cloaks.
The record was written between Indonesia, Mexico City, Berlin and New York, and distance became part of the method itself. Its core idea is a shared language that forms across differences in geography, experience and approach. In one process, Arp’s electronic hand percussion triggers fragments of Melati’s voice in real time, while a library of spoken words and phonemes is reshaped through chance-based rhythmic processes: voice becomes percussion, rhythm becomes melody, and the individual contributions dissolve into one another.
Some pieces, including “Water Talk” and “Second Language”, were recorded live in a single take; the rest were assembled gradually through remote exchange. In the final sessions in Indonesia, Balinese percussionist Putu Septa played kendang on two tracks, entering into dialogue with modular synthesis, FM textures, electronic drums, MIDI wind instruments and Melati’s shifting vocal forms. Sounds are slowed, stuttered and reorganised, reflecting a world of illusory borders, vanishing landscapes and glitching ecosystems, yet the album stays rooted in tending to something shared — a musical field built from listening, improvisation and repeated reunions. It seeks to blur boundaries without erasing the identities that meet across them, creating a space where voice and instrument, self and other, separation and togetherness can briefly exist at once.
