Irish vocalist and composer Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, a Grammy nominee and founding member of Celtic Woman, is releasing the album Sweet Sorrow on the SoSimpatico label (with Anthem Vinyl): ten original songs about grief, memory and consolation. The album is due on 23 October 2026, the first single “Near” came out on 25 September, and a launch concert will take place the following day, 24 October, at the Whyte Hall of the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) in Dublin.
The songs were written with composer Stephen Rennicks, best known until now for film scoring; this is his first collection of original songs outside cinema. The idea for the album grew out of a Christmas concert Méav gave in the same hall in 2023: conversations about music and loss turned into a collaboration, as both had experienced profound personal bereavements and wanted to make music that speaks quietly and honestly about grief without sentimentality. Raised in an Irish-speaking household steeped in traditional music and trained in classical voice, harp and piano, Méav weaves Irish traditional and classical influences together with contemporary, atmospheric arrangements.
It was recorded with engineer Hugh Drumm in Dún Laoghaire (he co-produced with Méav and Stephen), mixed in New York by Thomas Bartlett (whose collaborators include Taylor Swift, Norah Jones and The Gloaming), and mastered by Josh Bonati. The pair previously shaped the sound of Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell, whose emotional honesty became an important touchstone for Sweet Sorrow. The tracklist: “Probate”, “Near”, “Béara”, “Lament”, “Rest”, “Follow”, “Suan”, “Nothing Left”, “Caoin” and “Tempus”.
Méav’s career began with Chamber Choir Ireland and Anúna, followed by solo success and Celtic Woman, whose recordings have sold over ten million copies. She has toured with the RTE Concert Orchestra and Riverdance, performed at Carnegie Hall, and appeared at festivals including Kilkenny Arts Festival and Martin Hayes’ Masters of Tradition.
