Marcella is the 1982 debut solo album by Marcy Levy, later known as Marcella Detroit. By then she was well known as a vocalist and songwriter, having worked with Bob Seger and Leon Russell and spent years in Eric Clapton’s band, where she co-wrote “Lay Down Sally.”
According to Wikipedia, her earlier solo sessions with David Foster at RSO leaned toward R&B and felt to her like an attempt to pigeonhole her; that project was left unfinished. How those sessions relate to the Epic album isn’t spelled out in the sources I found.
The Epic LP was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Frank Rand and John Boylan, with Richard Feldman as co-producer. Levy and Feldman wrote most of the songs together, and Feldman plays guitar throughout. The credits read like a roster of Los Angeles session players: Bob Glaub and Trey Thompson on bass, Mike Botts and Jamie Oldaker on drums, Alan Pasqua on keyboards, Tom Scott on sax, and Don Felder on slide guitar. Backing vocalists include Timothy B. Schmit and Richard Page. The single was “Close to Her.”
The album did not chart. Epic reportedly refused her tour support for a run with John Mellencamp and later dropped her. “Love Side” was covered by Rita Coolidge in 1984. Levy and Feldman went on to write together for years, including Clapton’s “Tangled in Love.”
