Chris Gantry has led a fabled life. From gate-crashing Woodstock to being busted for farming “the best grass in Tennessee“, he stepped out of the music business to raise family, write children’s books and plays out in Key West and Nashville. Highly respected by contemporaries Kristofferson, Cash and Campbell, the crux of his new work here, at 83, is simpler. Gantry tells a good story.

The album starts with country-hymn sing-along Boldness of Spirit, and the band hits their stride from the off. Clearly, no one on the session was told perfection is the enemy of good, and guitars and pedal steel soar, lifted high by a rhythm section that drives the track with power. The song recounts the memories of a younger family member struggling with a song for a church performance, then smashing it on the day, compelling the pastor to declare that she had “boldness of spirit“.

For all the undoubted genius in the band, the star remains Gantry; his storied voice leading each song with warmth and a social conscience to lift the spirit. Catchphrase warns against the tragedy when our virtue slides into slogans and becomes meaningless, and we find ourselves nailed to the cross of hollowed-out beliefs. Worth Every Nail is a straight reckoning of the sacrifice of the cross: a reminder that truth is worth the sacrifice, and others will take on the fight. Dean tells the story of a time-travelling hobo, a simple man who takes the charity of a woman and the songwriter and then disappears: “There’s things in life you know nothing about“. All too true. The arrangement expertly creates the ambience of the story, acoustic guitars with pedal steel laying out a reverie of a landscape with authentic widescreen hues.

Mournful guitars dripping bluesy angst kick off the powerful Devil by Night as Gantry lays into grifters and bullies, “I can’t feel at peace with cheaters and takers, the over-religious and the fakers“, four minutes of choice barbs for perpetrators of dehumanisation. It’s a great track.

Gantry’s evocations of honesty, faith, compassion, and truth, at their best, bear comparison with Gram Parsons’ Grievous Angel and his old pal Kristofferson’s more reflective work, such as Good Christian Soldier. Classic country storytelling comes in the form of Whispers of Angels; a thief with a heart of gold story finds himself in front of the right judge, and the mercy shown is the “whisper of angels in a late afternoon“. It’s a song for the ages.

We’re back into more upbeat territory with Walkin’ The Last Mile, an exhortation to be yourself to the end, with the band on fine form. A playful pedal steel solo should bring a smile even to the ‘heard it all’ brigade.

More bite is on offer with Same Size Grave, a rollicking blues reminding us all that our final destinations are the same, despite what might occur in between! The band joyfully cuts loose with some fine blues soloing as “the worms have a feast“.

The highlight, perhaps, is The Truth; a stripped-back, timeless slice of folk Americana, with “saints in jail” and evil menacing in the absence of truth. Powerful stuff.

This might be a little too ‘country’ for some ears, but it is undeniably authentic. Gantry got a record contract in ’63, also doing some time in New York’s famous Brill Building as a writer. All this before finding his feet in Nashville, writing and performing with the cream of the talent in the decades that these songs sometimes hark back to. His is an original voice with a transgenerational career to draw from. The songs here all have something to say and are backed up with a very fine band. At 83, Gantry could be forgiven for handing in a valedictory pass note, but instead we get the real deal: an artist with plenty of fire and the tools to dish it out. Recommended.
