"Varosha" is the debut studio concept album by the solo indie project A Solitary Statue, officially released on May 15, 2026. The record is dedicated to one of the most famous and haunting places in Cyprus—the abandoned resort town of Varosha, which became a closed ghost town after the Turkish invasion of 1974.
A Solitary Statue is the alter ego of the British multi-instrumentalist and sound designer, who uses the concept of "dark tourism" to create conceptual records.
The album "Varosha" is conceived as an hour-long audio tour of an abandoned paradise. Each track is tied to a specific symbol of the abandoned city. The music leads the listener past crumbling luxury hotels where Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot once vacationed, through the cactus-covered main street (Democracy Avenue), and ends on a deserted sandy beach fenced with rusty barbed wire. Unlike classic, aggressive industrial music, this recording sounds fragile, delicate, and melancholy, conveying the idea of nature slowly and silently reclaiming a once-thriving metropolis.
