New Zealand composer Rudy Adrian, a prominent figure in ambient music, has released his thirteenth album on the Spotted Peccary label, Southern Isles Sketchbook. The work draws its inspiration from the remote, sparsely populated nature of the South Pacific, and its sonic fabric is built on drifting textures, subtle detail, and immersive sound environments.
The album runs for over 70 minutes and deliberately combines two ways of working. Half of the material consists of live late-night improvisations, captured at the moment of inspiration and left unaltered for their raw, unrepeatable energy. The other half is made up of carefully constructed compositions created through a long-established personal method. Adrian explains this choice by noting that the first version of an idea often has a magic that cannot be recreated, and this time he chose to trust such moments.
The music was recorded on Yamaha SY77 and Montage synthesizers and sequenced on an Apple Macintosh Plus. In this way Adrian preserves his recognizable style while cautiously exploring new sonic territory. The release also marks the beginning of an ongoing collaboration between the musician and Norwegian landscape and wildlife photographer Lars Nyquist, whose evocative images emphasize the sense of space and stillness inherent in the music and align with Adrian’s contribution to ambient.
