Over the course of several years, American musician Michael Nau built the album Popfly out of fragments: notebook lines, stray observations, and abandoned recordings that stayed with him as companions before taking their final form. Nau doesn’t force songs into existence; he follows them, trusting intuition, and writing and recording blur together — a melody may develop before its lyrics, and an accidental recording can become the foundation of a new song.
Most of the songs began at home, and by the time he entered the Vermont studio Little Jamaica with longtime friend and collaborator Benny Yurco, many had already lived several lives. Nau compares studio recording to covering his own songs, which is why the performances feel lived-in and effortless. The title track rests on simple, wonder-struck observations; “New Slack” moves with relaxed confidence; “Lost Station Hideaway” turns static and fading signals into something comforting, as if the song were being broadcast from just beyond reach.
Family and friendship are central to the record: Nau’s children sing on it, as does his wife and longtime collaborator Whitney McGraw, whose serene voice shapes the harmonies. Musically, the album blends folk, homespun psych-pop, country-folk, dreamlike atmospheric textures, and tape-warped experimentation. It is a collection of “transmissions” from different periods of the musician’s life, stitched together by instinct, warmth, and time — a portrait of a person paying close attention to the world and its small miracles.
