Danish singer-songwriter Fine Glindvad Jensen, known for her work with the cult entity The Crying Nudes alongside Dean Blunt, has released a new album, “Jazz Dreams.” It came out on the Escho label, the same imprint that issued her 2024 release “Rocky Top Ballads,” regarded as one of the best in its catalogue. The record blurs the lines between chamber pop, Americana, doo-wop and blunted trip-hop, with the closest reference points being Cindy Lee, Mazzy Star, Jessica Pratt and Lana Del Rey.
Despite the title, it is not a jazz record: it was simply assembled like a jazz improvisation session, as a maze of hazy, almost-familiar melodies. Its main distinction is a complex harmonic foundation that sounds completely effortless and carefree, a rarity in a pop landscape geared toward brevity and instantly catchy hooks. Fine’s informal, exquisite vocals hold the listener’s attention from start to finish.
The album opens with “The Thing”: an offhand jam like a dub take on Angelo Badalamenti, with a molasses-slow bassline, strangulated synth pads and snakelike strings, recalling the “Mulholland Drive” soundtrack. A ringing phone at the start and the plea “just breathe with me” immediately pull the listener into a waking dream. From there the record plays like a mixtape of half-remembered favourites: “Goodbye Brain” combines classic girl group sound with post-punk, while the short “Sometimes I Rush” is a rough-edged take on the Massive Attack “Mezzanine” aesthetic with a C86 tint. The downtempo single “Run” drifts toward calmer waters, but vocal harmonies keep jolting the listener out of the haze. “Portal” features some of the most subtle synthwork heard in years.
In the end, “Jazz Dreams” is an impeccably crafted pop album that never panders to the listener and shows a deep understanding of pop history; it can also be heard as a collage of illusory experiments.
