Clara Serra López - Lengua Materna (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Clara Serra López

Lengua Materna (“Mother Tongue”) is the debut project of London-based vocalist, composer and keys player Clara Serra López, who is of Spanish, Catalan and Cuban heritage. It comes out on Real World X, the Real World Records imprint set up for projects outside the traditional album format. The project first appeared in two parts, the EPs Lengua Materna (Part I), 25 July 2025, and Part II, 10 April 2026. The Qobuz listing for the 23 October 2026 edition contains the material from both EPs plus three tracks that are not on the label’s EP tracklists: “Espejos”, “Oigo Los Gritos” and “Súmate”. This reading of the contents is inferred from comparing the two sources; the label has not confirmed it.

The label describes the music as intertwining Clara’s Mediterranean heritage with her jazz background and a fascination with electronic soundscapes. Part I is framed as a deeply personal sonic narrative and a piece of social commentary; Part II turns to the isolation and mistrust produced by today’s social systems and to rebuilding connection in community. Clara says she has moved from asking whether giving your heart within a patriarchal framework is sustainable to a more personal task: learning how to ask for help.

Jake Long produced, with Oli Barton-Wood mixing. Clara wrote all of the material and handles vocals, keys and synths; Long plays bass synth, synths and drums, and Giuliano Modarelli plays guitar on Part I (Qobuz credits him on “Mi Tierra Que Robó” and “Worthy”).

The lyrics are specific. “Mi Tierra Que Robó” satirises the legacy of colonialism in Spain and Europe. “Mari Paz” takes on the cost-of-living crisis and the generational promise that hard work will pay off, which Clara ties to the 2008 recession and her parents’ experience of migration. “Worthy”, “Niña De La Risa” and “Sola” are linked to a vocal injury and the months of rehabilitation that followed. “I Don’t Trust You” grew out of encounters with self-described feminists who still undermined women.

Serra López studied jazz performance at the Guildhall School and won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Development award in 2021 and Help Musicians’ Next Level award in 2025 (per SXSW London’s listing). This is her first full-length project following the two EPs.
