The New York indie rock band The Upsides have released “New Jersey in the 90s,” the fourth single from their second album, In The Maze, due October 16 on Dream Wolf Records. The song reaches back to the childhood of brothers Matt and Dan Fullam in New Jersey and to the family who lived next door: the father was killed on 9/11, and the family later moved away. Matt Fullam stresses that the song is not about the event itself but about how hard it is to make sense of the distant past while acknowledging its deep impact, and about the shift they sensed even as small children, the end of an innocence that still glows amber in memory.
The song took a long time to find its final form: there were several versions, changes continued during mixing, and the bass was eventually re-recorded at The War on Drugs’ One Cue Recording studio in Burbank, leading Fullam to joke that it is their “Drugs-iest song yet.” Work on In The Maze began a month after their self-titled 2024 debut: first ten days of writing in Parksville, New York, by Matt, Dan and guitarist Hart Mechlin, then recording by the full band at The Building, a converted church in Marlboro, New York. The album was mixed by Austin Asvanonda, with additional production by Nick Perri and mastering by Steve Fallone, and string arrangements by Richard Jones and Laura Moody of Elysian Collective. The band consists of Matt Fullam (guitar, vocals), Dan Fullam (drums), Hart Mechlin (lead guitar), Pat Freeman (keyboards, guitar) and Matt DaSilva (bass).
