The MarbleTones is the fifties style swing blues band that has been rocking the house at many venues and festivals for 25 years. To celebrate this occasion they are releasing ‘Blues Keeps Knocking’, a traditional blues album with heartfelt stories and some non traditional twists.
The MarbleTones consists of a traditional line up of vocals, guitar, blues harp, bass and drums. The band wrote and recorded twelve tasteful and original new tunes that tell real life stories about relationship problems, alcohol and a constant cash flow problem. Another reocurring topic is the guitarist’s Ford Thunderbird, shown on the album cover and the inspiration for a fired up harp and guitar theme in the song ‘Ride With Me’.
Singer/bass player Anne-Maarten wrote the lyrics for the songs and delivers the vocals with soul and conviction, as you can hear on ‘Boogie Train’ about the steam train in his home town. He dives into some Tom Waits territory on the medium slow blues ‘Give Them Folks a Smile’ on which blues harp player Ben Bouman gets out the acoustic chromatic harp. Ben is a well known and respected musician in the harp scene and you can hear his amazing technique in solos and on catchy harp rifs like in the opening song of the album ‘Blues Keeps Knocking’ which takes you straight back to the early sounds of the blues.
The band started out showcasing the Marble tube amps built by guitarist A.J. Folkerts. The amplifiers are traditional hand built amps and you can hear that reverberating in the groovy guitar parts and the tasteful and sometimes jazzy solos, with the occasional mean riff like on ‘Around the Stump’.
‘Blues Keeps Knocking’ is a traditional blues album with heartfelt stories and some non traditional twists. In their 25 year existence the band played from Germany to the San Francisco Bay Area, from Finland to Italy. If you like swinging blues bands with some soul influences, you will love the MarbleTones and their new album ‘Blues Keeps Knocking’!
The band recorded the album in one room with few overdubs and it has that live feel. It grooves from the first to the last song. Bert de Jonge gets a drum solo on ‘Ride With Me’ and the band spice up a standard blues rif with a five four beat on the song ‘Five to Four’, taking it to the outer realms of the blues
