The Mumbai-based multilingual collective EXCISE DEPT — Karanjit Singh, Andrew Sabu, Rounak Maiti and Siddhant Vetekar, who deliberately resist genre labels — is regarded as one of the most closely watched new acts in South Asia. Their 2024 debut, SAB KUCH MIL GAYA MUJHE VOL 1, was built on dizzying, sample-heavy hip-hop and a cohesive visual universe: safari suits, rich narrative visuals and an interactive website. Vogue India dubbed this aesthetic “internet-fried surrealism.” It carried the group from art galleries to Lollapalooza India.
The collective is now signed to London’s Dialled In Records and is releasing its second album, SHOPNOBHUMI (“Dreamland”), made in collaboration with electronic artist Sanjay Das (Philtersoup). The material draws on partition-era stories, patriotic songs and the oral histories the members grew up with. The musicians recorded live improvisations without a metronome or grid, across sessions ranging from Navi Mumbai to Abbey Road Studios. The result sounds like the Voyager Golden Record — a lost multilingual transmission drifting through the endless void. It is an album of love songs, desperate pleas and tripped-out hymns, deliberately un-optimized for the playlist era.
