Visions of Light — a trio playing a blend of Balearic, ambient and dub, made up of Freebooter Records founder Simon Sheldon, Muzka and Dan Dub Lounge — has spent 2026 hard at work. First came the Dedications EP, with Balearic dub covers of club classics beloved on Ibiza; now the group releases its second album, Mycelium Bloom, the follow-up to its 2025 debut The Mandela Vortex. The title borrows the scientific term for the root network of mushrooms and other sprouting fungi.
The musicians infuse their signature downtempo dub grooves and sun-baked Balearic soundscapes with hallucinatory electronics and psychedelic intent. The album is rich in layers: strummed and plucked guitars, thick textures, fresh morning-bright motifs. It is available on vinyl and as a digital download, the latter including two bonus tracks: the off-kilter, warm deep dub of “Saru” and the jazzy, sample-rich “Mirage”.
The record opens with “Split The Scene”, an undulating ambient dub piece where acidic squelches gather around deep bass, languid beats and pads. “All The Best Things” evokes an early-90s chill-out room with touches of desert blues, while “Holding Jupiter” sinks into the same “deep inside the music” feel: low-tempo drift, effects-laden guitars, ultra-deep bass and dreamy chords.
Alongside these psychedelic episodes sit warmer, comforting pieces closer to the group’s dub roots: the summery skank of “B Town”, the dancefloor Balearic dub of “Radiant Flux”, the sunset-ready “Perfect You” (words and vocals by Richard Dormer, flute by Luis Vilca) and the slow-burning, melodic Balearic soundscape “Let Go”. Both soothing and mind-expanding, the album shows a trio subtly evolving its sound while keeping its sun-soaked dub foundations — and as a sequel, it is a stunner.
