In 2026, a documentary was released about Northern Soul — a British subculture built around rare American soul and R&B records, danced to all night in clubs across the north of England. The film’s official soundtrack was issued by Charly Records in association with Screenbound Pictures. The compilation gathers iconic tracks from the scene’s heyday, which fell in the 1970s.
The release’s visual identity is tied to the movement’s most famous venue, Wigan Casino. The sleeve art and film poster were created by British photographer Red Saunders, who shot inside the club in 1976. He recalls the assignment as priceless: the motto “Keep the Faith” was the scene’s manifesto, uniting R&B lovers and multi-racial dancers who danced all weekend long. Scene participant Paul Mason stresses that the subculture was defined by four elements — music, dancing, fashion and drugs; remove any one, and it would not have been a subculture.
Critics welcomed the film warmly: Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it a thumping celebration of the legendary underground club scene, while James King of BBC Radio 2 noted that it captures what makes the scene so special and serves as an interesting piece of social history. Richard Searling (BEM) summed up the movement’s legacy: a thousand records and a million memories.
