Siblings Bobby Townson and Emma Townson from Chorley, Lancashire, make up British Birds, writing, recording and creating everything themselves, from the songs to the artwork. Their album Murmurate, Oscillate marries the bite of garage punk with sharp English pop craft and a DIY spirit, resulting in a sound that is immediate, ambitious and unmistakably their own.
The record opens with Lie Down With Dogs, Stand Up With Fleas, aimed at weak, ineffectual authority. Polka Dot Eyes follows school friends from Lancashire who return from the Army physically and mentally damaged. Dark humour, social observation and personal reflection are backed by choruses that hit hard.
Scary Movies recalls their grandfather’s love of horror films; Just Like Them celebrates introversion; Blame Game and Thunder Claps dig into tensions within relationships. Dominic Lawson plays drums (Michael Aindley on Just Like Them), and James Robinson plays bass.
