Project leader Andy Tillison described the album as "a story of life: our lives together." Lyrically, the record is a sweeping narrative and musical journey through 67 years of social, technological, and cultural change.
After his previous album, 2024's To Follow Polaris, which Tillison recorded entirely alone, for Was he assembled one of the strongest band lineups in recent years. Among other things, the project welcomed the iconic progressive bassist John Jowitt (IQ, Arena, Jadis).
