Baile as Baile is a new album by bassist, composer and arranger Devra Hoff, recorded on numerous acoustic double basses. It is luminous, deeply personal music with a longing lyricism and a meditative, enveloping sound: original compositions inspired by traditional music, plus original arrangements of traditional songs. Tara Jane O’Neil (prepared autoharp, tracks 6 and 8) and Julia Holter (harmonium, tracks 6 and 8) appear as guests. The photographs and liner notes are also by Hoff herself.
For Hoff, this continues the path begun with Voices From the Empty Moor (Songs of Anne Briggs), which shares the same lyricism, longing and sense of loss that leads to a newly found sense of self. Baile as Baile is its “inner dub”: an instrumental version that, in this case, came before the later, fully voiced iteration. The material grew out of bass-as-primary-voice works that Hoff posted on Bandcamp, which listeners turned to as a refuge from the chaos of the outside world and from personal upheaval. Hoff herself describes the album as a search for an elusive sense of home and belonging that transcends place or scene, and the realization that this “home” must be found, or built, within oneself; the title plays on “home away from (or in search of?) home.”
The album is released by the label AUM Fidelity, which has worked with Hoff since Echolocation by Mendoza Hoff Revels, the project she co-leads with guitarist Ava Mendoza. That album made the “Best Albums of 2023” lists of NPR, The New York Times and The Wire. The album is best heard alone, letting the music rise from silence, or with a trusted intimate, as a singular singing voice full of lived wisdom.
