Michael Rother - Traumreisen (1987)

After an unsuccessful attempt to reunite Neu! in the mid-1980s, Rother returned to solo work and recorded much calmer, more measured, and contemplative material. The album's title is an ironic play on words: in German, the word "Traumreisen" (traditional German for "dream trip") is often associated with travel agency advertisements. However, for the musician himself, it signified nocturnal journeys through the subconscious and dreams.
The release's sound reflects the spirit of the late '80s: Rother's guitar tone is noticeably softened and enveloped in a glossy electronic sheen, intertwined with soft synthesizer undertones. The music ranges from rhythmic, new-wave-reminiscent tracks (such as "Reiselust" with its dense club beat) to deep ambient landscapes ("Schwarze Augen"), evoking the majestic style of Tangerine Dream.
