Geologist & Kyle Simon - The Sirens (2026)

Developed alongside visual artist Kyle Simon, Geologist's third album of 2026 is quite literally powered by the night sky, made using a telescope fitted with photodiodes to collect light from the stars, moon and planets and feed the data into a modular synth rig.
The universe has always entranced artists, but few have been able to directly translate its glimmers into vertiginous drone. Brian Weitz headed out to Simon's Farrington Observatory in Joshua Tree in 2024 and the two aimed the telescope at the sky, using the signal generated from the light-sensitive circuit to belch out electrical currents that Weitz subsequently transformed into CV signals for his setup. Playing to a small group of friends, Simon would adjust the telescope to modify the light's intensity (he likens this to playing a theremin) and Weitz would react to the changes on the fly, piping the sound into an analog amplifier. And it's engaging material: wobbly synth drones that you can hear being modulated in real time, jumping, jerking and patiently shifting toward dissonance as the conditions change.

This kind of thing always sounds nocturnal - not a million miles away from a classical evening raga, if you want to go deep - and Weitz and Simon lean into the concept, reaching back to classical mythology to infuse meaning into their long-form work. Whether the music belongs alongside 'Odyssey' and 'Spindle of Necessity' is one thing, but you can't fault the two artists for trying something different. Fans of La Monte Young or Charlemagne Palestine should check in immediately, that's for sure.
