The 1994 debut album “Portal” by the American duo Windy & Carl is finally getting its first-ever vinyl release. It is a milestone in space rock and drone: Windy Weber and Carl Hultgren of Dearborn, Michigan, fused kosmische with the hazy, noise-tinged aesthetic of Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine, drafting a blueprint that others would redraw for decades.
The duo is best known for the album “Depths” (1998) on Kranky, which blended psychedelic rock, drone, ambient and no wave. But their signature sound had already taken shape through years of work in their Michigan “lab”, and has barely changed since. Their influence is often underrated: they act as connective tissue between Stars of the Lid, Labradford, Roy Montgomery and Grouper, and recently performed alongside fellow Michiganders Optigan Conservatory.
Like many young bands of the early ’90s, Windy & Carl eagerly absorbed British music — the narcotic soundscapes of Pete Kember and Jason Pierce, the instrumental melancholy of The Durutti Column, Robert Hampson’s “trance rock”, Kevin Shields’ dense compositions — but were just as inspired by krautrock, spiritual jazz and classical minimalism. Unlike the moody, often aggressive posturing of shoegaze, their music sounded isolated yet cozy, like a warm cabin in a snowfall. Their long-form, rock-based instrumentals, washed-out and levitational, are comparable to “Music For Airports” and Alice Coltrane’s “Journey In Satchidananda”.
They had kindred contemporaries — Flying Saucer Attack (Bristol), Roy Montgomery (Christchurch) — but on “Portal” the scattered influences first came together as a whole: rock’s roughest edges were sanded away to reveal a spacier sound that would endure for years. It can be heard in the cheeky “Ode to Spaceman” and the fifteen-minute “Glowing/Colorful”, whose discoveries echoed in artists from Fennesz to Yellow Swans.
