Australian soul singer Ella Thompson from Melbourne has released her third solo record, Triumph & Sadness. It is out on the UK label Mr Bongo and on College of Knowledge in Australia and New Zealand. Its ten songs draw on the classic sweet soul sound while speaking to the present and to a need for real human connection. The album was recorded in four days at an all-analogue studio in rural Victoria, cut direct to tape in the manner of 1960s and 70s sessions. Horns, vocals and overdubs were added at Sound Park in Northcote. The songs were written with Liam McGorry (Temporary Blessings), with musicians from Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo. Mixing was done by Wayne Gordon, known for his work with Daptone and The Womack Sisters.
Earlier came the EP Domino (2023) and the LP Ripple on the Wing (2024), on which Thompson stretched the boundaries of song form and took up studio production. Her sound took shape in Melbourne’s independent scene, alongside Hiatus Kaiyote. Her reference points include Renée Geyer, Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield, and the thinking of Patti Smith, Alice Walker and Simone Weil.
The album’s centrepiece, Promise To Keep, is about courage, naivety and love as a “renewed romanticism”. Change of Heart addresses the fleeting nature of a moment and the way everything contains its opposite. It is a slow ballad with falsetto and group vocals in the spirit of The Royalettes, ending in triumphant horns. My Weakness uses the myth of Narcissus to reflect on unsated longing under capitalism, while Dandelion asks what we fear when we care too much. For Thompson, this is a first reach toward a global audience.
