San Diego’s The Sleepwalkers are veterans of Chicano roots music who have played together for more than thirty years. More than two decades after their debut album Can’t Stop Rockin’, they have released the eight-track Almas Perdidas, which takes stock of their journey through the music, culture, and community that shaped them.
The album’s sound is born on the Southern California border, where Chicano rock, roots rock, psychedelia, rockabilly, cumbia, and Americana mix freely. Danceable cumbia sits alongside gritty vintage rock and roll and soulful Americana. The band’s face is the “Spanglish” vocal of Johnny Valenzuela, which combines the swagger of American rock and roll with Chicano tradition, complemented by the expressive guitar of Ritchie Orduño. The song “Chicana Mama Boogaloo” embodies the spirit of Barrio Logan and border-town rock, while “Lockochon” fuses traditional Chicano music with the energy of punk.
Over the years, the band has shared stages with Poncho Sanchez, Son Rompe Pera, Rosie Flores, and Ozomatli, and won Best Americana at the San Diego Music Awards. A local publication described their sound as a blend of Los Lobos, the cowpunk of The Blasters, and Texas roadhouse blues. The album was released by Blind Owl Records, becoming the label’s first Rock en Español release and the band’s first-ever record on vinyl; it is also available on CD and as a digital download, with the vinyl edition limited and pressed on tan-colored vinyl.
