The High Spirits were a Minnesota teen band of the 1960s whose garage sound laid the foundation for Twin Cities punk. Their first full-length LP gathers all their prized singles and adds 10 previously unreleased archival cuts, including lost takes on songs by The Who, Sam Cooke, and Beau Brummels. The record traces the band’s journey from garage rock into psychedelia, and comes with an extensive liner-note insert. Their influence reached beyond the local scene: three of them were among the earliest to join the “purple” lineage of Minneapolis music (a nod to the Prince circle).
Their run was brief but eventful: opening for The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, cutting a genuine radio hit with a singer stricken with mononucleosis, touring the Midwest relentlessly, nearly being killed by a gang of jealous boyfriends, getting arrested over a food fight, and knocking down power lines during a gig.
Four unreleased originals reveal a creative side of the band that was barely hinted at before. “She’s Got Soul” is a pop number with a sha-la-la harmony chorus. “Grooving with the Stone Fox” and “Sun Dance,” with lacerating fuzz guitar and syncopated grooves, recall Hendrix and underscore the band’s role in the region’s budding freak scene. “Alien Song” resembles Donovan in his “Sunshine Superman” era, pushing psychedelia to the limit with the wild trumpet of respected bandleader Leo Fine, dizzying psych-out guitar, and sci-fi lyrics.
